Set in the quiet countryside overlooking the River Lea, The Whistling Duck is Hertford's freshest restaurant boasting the kind of menu and ambience usually reserved for those eateries situated in the better parts of London. Situated just off the Lower Hatfield Road into Hertford, the restaurant proudly sits on the grounds of the rennovated Riverside Garden Centre.
From the moment you set foot in the door, you are simultaneously hit with the fragrant smells emanating from the kitchen, and the delightfully cosy yet sophisticated décor that lifts you off your feet and carries you in. The warm reds, leathers and oak combine effortlessly promising a comfortable and relaxing experience. The spotlights, interspersed with candles offer just the right amount of strategically placed light to support the daylight beaming in from the windows spanning the entirety of the front and back walls. However it is the contrast of the brushed steel bar front and greenery in every nook that really sets this place alive.
The cleanly styled bar, adopting a polished charcoal granite bar top, a brushed stainless steel face, and embossed mirrors, almost looks out of place compared to its surroundings to the point that it looks right. Stocked with the usual array of soft drinks, mixers, wines, spirits and liqueurs, as well as a healthy selection of real beers and lagers on tap.
The restaurant serves a variety of meals during two sittings; the lunchtime slot operates between 12pm and 3pm with the Evening Menu starting to be served from 6pm. Colin, the Head Chef, and his experienced team go all out in order to create culinary masterpieces day in, day out.
